No Risk. No Reward.

I will not be watching the NFL this football season.

Because, I don’t want to support a system that doesn’t not value, support, or uplift the ideals that I have. It’s simple. The NFL has donated one million dollars toward the Trump Administration this week. Even with the vile comments and the hate speech, there are institutions like this one, that will continue to propel ignorance.

I refuse to partake in supporting them through ticket purchases or advertising dollars. My TVs will not be broadcasting any of their games.

I am supported and reaffirmed in my beliefs, by this quote from the remarkable, Paul Robeson. A brilliant athlete and artist, who was unabashed about speaking against systematic white supremacy and the fight for freedom for blacks.

The civil rights movement was less than a century ago. Yet, the outspoken and ready for action men of those times, seem like giants against the jelly back replacements of today.

Without any collective change, we are all scattered ants, waiting to be crushed.

Paris is such a beautiful city. The food, the culture, the people; all of it is just amazing. Upon first arrival, I saw this city as a big Harlem. The cozy cafes and high traffic, were all reminiscent of Uptown. But a couple days after, I began to notice the real magic of Paris. The city just has a sophisticated flair that is so suave, that it’s almost too smooth for words.

I would write more but I’m really enjoying life and am super busy. Know that I am doing great things and loving the work I do.

Be great.

I’m very happy to share that I will be in Europe this summer. Much of my time will be spent in Paris, but I will definitely try and visit some other cities while I am there. Paris is a city that has been very prominent in the development of black artists, writers, and entertainers since the twentieth century. Many of my favorite writers took their pilgrimage to Paris, and developed some really profound work. It will be amazing to see how my style develops in the city of lights.

P.S. Thank you to all of my European fans. You guys support my work so much, especially my Danish fans. I love you guys and thank you for allowing me to travel the world and do what I love doing, being creative. You all are the best.

See you soon!

Effervescent Sensuality

The lyrics to Floetry “Say Yes” are simply, effervescent and sensual. I’ve been fond of this song for over a decade, because it speaks about the imaginative thoughts that we have whenever we see someone that we like. It describes the uncertainty about if we will or won’t actually indulge our senses and give in to primal urges.

I’ve often thought that this would be a perfect song for a guy to remake, as men are socialized to be more open to one night stands or casual sex, and needing to prod a woman out of her head and into his bed. Nonetheless, Andre Harris and Marsha Ambrosius wrote a stunning piece of work. Enjoy the simplistic, yet very vivid lyrics below.

 “Say Yes”

See I’ve been watching you for a while your smile and stuff
and I don’t know if I can be with you for tonight alright,
is that alright baby, baby

[Verse 1:]
There is only one for me
You have made that a possibility
We could take that step to see, ohh
If this is really gonna be
All you gotta do is say yes

All you gotta do is say yes
Don’t deny what you feel let me undress you baby
Open up your mind and just rest
I’m about to let you know you make me so
All you gotta do is say yes
Don’t deny what you feel let me undress you baby
Open up your mind and just rest
I’m about to let you know you make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so,
You make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so

[Verse 2:]
Loving you has taken time, taken time
But I always knew you could be mine
I recognize the butterflies inside me
Sense is gonna be made tonight, tonight
All you gotta do is say yes

[Repeat Chorus]

[Ad lib to end]

3 Years

Hey Readers,

First, I would like to thank everyone who has written me a comment or an email, and shared your thoughts regarding my work. They are all appreciated. It is still unreal at times, to comprehend that my book has crossed the seas, and landed in the hands of readers all over the world. I physically have not traveled to Australia, The Netherlands, Russia, Denmark or Brazil, but my book has!

Knowing that, is super inspiring. It gives me more reasons to continue doing what it is that I love to do, which is to entertain and motivate people to live out their best life. I’ve come a long way from growing up on the Southside of Chicago. And, I’m only just getting started. There are more lives that need to be reached.

Writing is a form of self-healing for me, and I love to take my time, and really give my work the best that I can give, now. I have worked extremely hard and have been very dedicated to honing my craft. There are so many nights that I can recall vividly, when it felt like nobody was reading my work. The money wouldn’t flow how I wanted. And the opportunities just wouldn’t quite cement themselves the way I felt they should.

Then, I matured and my perspective on those things enhanced. Opportunities are always there. It only took me being open to seeing them, for me to actually recognize that. There is an abundance of everything that I need, and there is not one reason to wonder about lack. I am very blessed and fortunate to make a great living now, by using my God given gift. I travel where I want to travel, I support my family, and I work for myself. I do not share this as a way of gloating, but more so as a testament to what self-belief and relying on your Higher Power can do for your life. I know how it feels to be abased. Yet, I also know how it feels to live high off the land. At the end of the day, I realize that it is inside of me. That same power is inside of you. You are the only person who is able to create the life you want.

Learning to get out of my own way, has been the most rewarding experience of my life so far. Getting out of my own way, has freed up my mind to dream of new stories. It’s allowed me to go with the flow, and not against it.

Moreover, I would like to say, that I am working on an amazing project – that I am very proud about sharing with you, soon. Until everything is complete, I will withhold the details. Just know that it is coming. Though I will say this, what I have to share, has been a dream come true for me. I don’t know if I could be any happier. One of my biggest dreams, has come true. It’s more fantastic that I could have imagined.

Thank you again for all your encouragement and support. Stay tuned for something very special.

The Wiz

This past weekend, I watched this movie with my  PopPop. As a child, I could never really get into the film, not sure why, but it just never captured my attention for long. However, as an adult, I find the film to be rather enjoyable.

Over the course of the year, my interest and knowledge regarding metaphysics has grown, and this film had elements of metaphysics sprinkled about. One of the main mantras was about using your imagination and recognizing that everything that you need, is within. It’s so simple, yet so challenging for some to get this. It took me a while, but I internalize and accept that I was born with all that I need. We have the freedom to dream big dreams and fantasize about the life we wish to live. It is our responsibility to ourselves to use the freedom wisely and attract the life we desire.

Though, society doesn’t often encourage fantasy or abstract thinking, that does not mean that it isn’t useful. Much of the work that we do is very linear and quite strident (random, this is one of my new favorite words and I was wanting to use it.) However, there is so much fun in letting your imagination run wild. Of course, as adults we have to manage our priorities, but I think it’s equally important to remember that we owe it to our inner child to explore.

Read a book. Write a book. Watch a movie. Make a movie. Do something creative.

Enjoy the fun in letting go, and just surrender.

This past year has been all about growth, both in my personal and professional life. Admittedly, during the experiences that I’ve had that have led me to where I stand today, I was frustrated. They were tough and challenging, but as I have come to learn, worth it. I’ve learned so much about myself, and have come out of the chaos a better person. When you’re in the throes of something, it is hard to see the situation clearly. However, when you overcome a challenge and are open to learning the universal lesson, things become clear.

Life is what you make of it. Honestly. It’s a challenge. You have to decide to be happy, to be forgiving, to be loving. I am grateful that I have wonderful people in my life who care for me and my well being. There is no greater feeling in the world for me, than the feeling of being appreciated for who I am.

If you can remember, say hello to someone whom you haven’t spoken with in a while. They may really enjoy hearing from you, and knowing that you are wishing them well.

Be kind with yourself. You’re human and you’re growing.
